Today is Levavi, the first sunday of Advent. Advent (adventus=coming) is the period before christmas during which we wait for the birth of Christ and start preparing everything for the christmas festivities. It is also the time in which we can start singing and playing christmas music, so here is my first christmas contribution for this year. Hugo Strasser and his Orchestra bringing you a swinging christmas on this 1973 album. The songs are not arranged in the typical christmas or Strasser way. All 12 songs got a bit of a jazzy arrangement by arrangers Ehrlinger and Thusek.

Mr. Acker Bilk (Bernard Stanley Bilk) and Bent Fabric (Bent Fabricius-Bjerre) join forces on this 1969 album "Cocktails for two". The first on the clarinet and the second on piano, together accompanied by the Leon Young String Chorale. Both Acker Bilk and Fabric had one song that made them world famous instantly. In 1962 Acker Bilk wrote "Stranger on the shore", which was originally called "Jenny" after his daughter. In 1961 Fabric (using the pseudonym Frank Björn) wrote the song "Omkring et Flygel" (Around the piano) for the television show with the same name he had on Danish television. In 1962 the song would become world famous as "Alley cat". Both titles are on this album.

Alan Tew is a British composer and arranger.

He got his start as the pianist/arranger for the Len Turner Band based in London, in the 1950s.

He is known as composer of library music, including the theme songs for British TV programmes, Doctor in the House called Bond Street Parade, theme from Mother Makes Three. A track entitled "The Big One", was used in an episode of the British detective show Van der Valk. He also composed all the music for the series, The Hanged Man, some of which has been used as incidental music for The Two Ronnies, The Sweeney and would eventually become the intro music for the American TV show, The People's Court.

He also has led his own orchestra, The Alan Tew Orchestra, and with full orchestra at his disposal, Alan Tew shows a gift for judicious use of instrumentation. The Hanged Man soundtrack is a masterpiece of intelligent exploitation. Although his music is huge, bombastic and very 70s, Tew utilizes everything from the congas to the Moog to maximum dramatic effect.

Studied classical music in Berlin, but in the early 1930s concentrated on popular music. In 1935, he joined Heinz Wehner's brand new orchestra, becoming its principal arranger and trombone soloist (although he also played bass and vibraphone). An accompished musician, he was much in demand in the studios and played with many famous bandleaders. In 1939, he was asked by the Imperial label to form a studio band with which he recorded 131 titles between April of that year and November 1943. At first the band was relatively small, concentrating around his solo trombone and singers like Rudi Schuricke, but more and more musicians were added and with the advent of "Berking's Spitzenserie", a number of original compositions, Berking used a full bigband. Initially, Berking tried to create a "German" kind of dance music (propaganda minister Goebbels having declared German popular music on a par with classical music) with mixed results. As time passed his recordings increasingly became more big band jazz oriented and he used good soloists like Benny de Weille (alto/clt), Primo Angeli and Tip Tichelaar (pno) and Freddie Brocksieper and Harry van Dijk (dms). A good deal of the bands time was spent on accompanying singers, some good (Rudi Schuricke and Horst Winter) and some less than good (eg. Iska Geri and Harald Paulsen). Well arranged and played, Berking's records sold in fairly large numbers in war-torn Germany. In 1942 Berking became involved in the Deutsche Tanz- und Unterhaltungsorchester, a large radio orchestra, as composer, arranger and trombonist. Because of the heavy bombing raids on Berlin, this band was transferred to Prague in 1943 and as a consequence Berking's studioband was broken up. After the war Berking built himself a splendid new career through his leadership of the dance orchestra of the Hessian Broadcasting Corporation (Hessischer Rundfunk), which he led till the early 1970s.

Here is an album which we got a request for from one of our followers and contributors. It's an album by Andy Ross and his Orchestra from 1978. I hope it is the album you meant. On this album Andy Ross plays 14 of Bill and Bobbie Irvine's favourites. Bill & Bobbie Irvine were a professional ballroom couple in the 60's. They've won many competitions and were world champions for lots of years. Beside dancing competitions they also gave demonstrations and lessons to numerous dancers which lasted long after they had stopped entering competitions.
