Tommy Morgan - Tropicale

Here's a fine record for all the excotica fans, contributed by LL team-member Peet.
Tommy Morgan is the most unique harmonica player in the recording industry today. He recently celebrated 50 years as a recording musician in Hollywood (first "session" in September 1950 with the Andrews Sisters for Decca Records). Long time first call in the studio recording industry, he has played on over 7000 sessions, recording for motion pictures, television, records, CDs and commercials. With reruns throughout the world of the long running television series Green Acres, Sanford and Son, The Waltons, The Rockford Files, The Dukes of Hazard, The Newhart Show and China Beach, performances on hit records Good Vibrations (The Beach Boys), Rainy Days and Mondays (The Carpenters), He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother (The Hollies) and others, as well as a solo appearance on The Academy Awards 2000 television broadcast (estimated audience one billion), his harmonica playing has been heard by more people than any other player in history. As a performer, he has given four command performances, and has appeared in concert in over 30 countries. He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Music (Composition) from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has composed background music for episodes of The Twilight Zone, Have Gun, Will Travel, Gunsmoke, and for the Will Rogers, USA television special. He has been arranger for Johnny Cash, Glenn Yarbrough and Rod McKuen. His sight reading ability, improvisational skills in jazz and blues, and his classical background mark him as a most unusual musician.

Alvino Rey - Ping Pong ! (1960)

Capitol ST-1262 (1960)
Alvino Rey is best known as the father of the pedal steel guitar. His inventive style helped popularize the amplified guitar for generations to come.
For exotica fans, Rey's greatest fame is as one of the pivotal session men of exotica. The other worldly Theremin-like sounds he coaxed from his console guitar were sought out by Esquivel, George Cates, and others. Rey also played alongside Jack Costanzo, Irv Cottler, Emil Richards, and Jimmy Rowles in the Surfmen, a session-man supergroup that recorded three albums of killer Martin Denny knock-offs for budget labels Alshire and Somerset.

Ferrante and Teicher - Soundproof

THE SOUND; IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE finest high quality audio equipment, don't bother to playthis record. For here Arthur Ferrante and Louis Teicher present some of the most unusual, massive, and baffle-busting arrangements ever recorded. In fact it is absolutely the last word in effects recording, utilizing two gimmicked Steinway grands and multi-channel, five-track stereophonic recording coupled with the most unusual electronic effects you have ever heard.

If you are a fan of hi-fi and great recorded sound you might enjoy guessing the gimmicks. Each piece contains a new gimmick not used in the one before. We are sure you have seen records boasting "frequency response 16 — 22,000 cycles," where the instruments in question have no fundamental lower than 100 or higher than 12,000, but the same cannot be said for this record, for if the fundamental in question does not lie within a range Ferrante and Teicher want, they merely relocate it to any frequency within the range of human hearing by means of electronics.

So many records involving gimmicks, both from a performing and an electronic standpoint, have a very cold atmosphere and very little musical value. But Arthur and Lou and their engineer have been experimenting with sound recording for years, and in this album have achieved beautiful moods—dynamic, sensual, humorous—and really remarkable variety.

The recording was made through seventeen channels, utilizing four Telefunken U-47, four Altec 21-C, four Altec 21-D, and five specially designed microphones. These channels were multed through four 6-channel mixers for simultaneous monaural and stereophonic recording, feeding modified 30" Ampex 301 machines, adapted for 14" reels, with our own specially designed record and playback amplifiers. Three 60-watt amplifiers were used for monitoring at the sessions. All seventeen mikes were placed on movable suspended booms in such a way that their movement could be controlled from the booth while the recording was being made.

This record was processed from 30" original tapes according to Westminster's new and revolutionary "Panorthophonic" technique on continuously variable-pitch Scully lathes equipped with Western Electric feedback cutters. The finished records were then A-B-ed against the original master tapes to insure an absolute match to the original sound.

The R.I.A.A. characteristic is used for this recording. To achieve the greatest fidelity, each Westminster record is mastered at the volume level technically suited to it. Therefore, set your volume control at the level which sounds best to your ears. Variations in listening rooms and playback equipment may require additional adjustment of bass and treble controls to obtain NATURAL BALANCE. Play this recording only with an unworn, microgroove stylus (.001 radius). For best economical results we recommend that you use a diamond stylus, which will last longer than other needles. Average playback times: diamond—over 2000 plays; sapphire—50 plays; osmium or other metal points—be sure to change frequently. Remember that a damaged stylus may ruin your collection.

Ken Griffin - Skating Time (1967)

Ken Griffin - Skating Time (1967)
CBS 52417
From the time that an organ sounded like....an organ !
Ken Griffin; The most successful organist of the 1950s. Griffin recorded a slew of albums, mostly for Columbia, and had Top 40 pop hits with his covers of "The Anniversary Song" and "You Can't Be True, Dear." The latter reportedly sold something like 3.5 million copies, but the funny thing is that the hit version was actual a dub of vocals by singer Jerry Wayne over a copy of the tune recorded by Griffin as an instrumental number for skating rinks.

Hugo Strasser - Tanzhits '71

Tanzhits '71
This is almost too good to be true: Hugo Strasser (*1922), Germany’s first ambassador of swing, tackles Deep Purple, Blood Sweat and Tears, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, The Rattles ...... And how! These powerhouse versions are as sharp as it gets. The hard swinging arrangements were written by saxophonist Werner Tauber (1934-2001), a long-time member of Strasser’s band. This record features stellar versions of rock hits like “Paranoid”, “The Witch” and “Jingo” - all propelled to new heights by superb arrangements and super-tight playing. The album was part of Strasser’s regular “Tanzplatte Des Jahres” (Dance Record Of The Year) series, which ran successfully for a period of over 30 years. Strasser’s long career began as a clarinetist in post-war Germany, playing swing and jazz in American GI clubs as part of the Max Greger Sextet. In 1955 he formed his own orchestra which became an instant success. Over the decades he recorded countless albums and was a constant fixture on German TV. King Hugo is still in demand these days: Since 2000 he has performed regularly with Max Greger and Paul Kuhn under the name “Swing Legends” - to sold-out venues and enthusiastic responses. A true Lounge Legend !!
